This is my 100th post on Capture the Moment. Recently it's been a bit of a low point for my photography, it's been almost exactly a year since I decided to get into this hobby. Sometimes I stuggle to think of things to shoot, other times I have them coming out of my ears.

The point is I'm so glad I started this photoblog, and I have every intention of keeping it going - especially now that I feel I'm on the way up.

Thanks for all your comments folks, if it weren't for that then I wouldn't bother posting at all - so please keep them coming!

Daave... you chose a great shot for your 100th! I jumped here from your post on dpreview, it's been a little while since I've been here and really enjoyed some of your recent work. I find that inspiration waxes and wanes over time, I wouldn't worry - you still got plenty of Mojo goin' :-)

I must say I also like this one better than the others in this Butterfly series. It's not so much the composition as the lighting/atmos. The comp is good though, the leaf and the butterfly almost mirror each other which is a comp plus, but I think the best features of this is that:
- the whole butterfly is fairly sharp (versus wing speed),
- his pose is strong, it seems almost like a ballet stance with him up on his "toes"
- you are effectively at eye-level with him (much as you were in "Motionless", but it lacked the impact this one has)
- it has some really great tonality.

I think the tonality/lighting is the strongest aspect. It has a kind of gothic "dark glow", often acheived by blurring a layer and blending it in multiply mode, but I think it acheives it in this case by the DOF falling off in concert with the light darkening as you recede in the frame. This effect is balanced by the darkness in the lower parts of the frame also, so effectively you have what appears to be a central area that is bright and sharp, with both the light and focus falling off at top and bottom of frame in a dreamy kind of way.

Well, that's my unlearn-ed critique anyway, suffice to say "I like it too" :-)

Wow, now that's a good critique! Thanks Ash. I think you've managed to nail it pretty much on the head. I agree with everything you say. The dark glow was really just lighting luck along with a healthy boost in contrast.

I'll have to remember the eye level point too, very true.

Thanks.

Dave, it’s a small world. I took the same shot within minutes of you taking yours. Yep, it was me stating the obvious about what a cracking good camera the 7000 was. (But you already new that didn’t you?)
Mind you, it’s the guy behind the lens that makes a good photograph, and you’ve got it just right with this one. Everything Ash says is spot on.
Mine? Well, it’s just another butterfly photograph. Hmmm!
